Kata

Kata are the formal sequences at the heart of Kyokushin. Every movement is set out below, step by step, with the photographs that go with it. Choose a kata from the list to begin.

Taikyoku Sono Ichi / Ni

Taking the overview – the large view. Seeing the whole picture rather than focussing on the individual parts. Taikyoku kata – levels one and two.

Taikyoku Sono Ichi

Start the kata in fudo dachi (fig. 1).

On the command “Yoi” first bring both hands open to ear height, palms facing inwards, simultaneously position both heels in an outward direction into uchi-hachi-ji-dachi (fig. 2) (n.b. these movements are executed quickly). Slowly and with power bring both hands down closing to form a fist and at the same time pull both feet in parallel to each other into yoi dachi (fig. 3) (n.b. this series of movements remains the same throughout the Taikyoku and Pinan Katas).

On the command “Hajime” move the left foot at 90° to the left (fig. 4) into zenkutsu dachi and block mae gedan barai (fig. 5) (n.b. ensure that the left fist is approximately “one fist” space above the left knee).

Move forward into right zenkutsu dachi and punch right chudan oi tsuki (fig. 6).

With the right foot, slide backwards and at a diagonal angle placing the right foot in the correct position and at the same time positioning the arms ready for the block (fig. 7), turn the body at the completion of the movement 180° into right zenkutsu dachi and block mae gedan barai (fig. 8).

Taikyoku Sono Ni

Taikyoku Sono Ichi and Taikyoku Sono Ni are identical in movement with the exception that all the punches in Taikyoku Sono Ichi are at middle level (chudan) and in Taikyoku Sono Ni the punches are at upper level (jodan).
