Kata
Kata are the formal sequences at the heart of Kyokushin. Every movement is set out below, step by step, with the photographs that go with it. Choose a kata from the list to begin.

Tensho
Rolling hands with fluid palms. This kata can also be performed at speed.

Tensho
On the second command “Tensho”, open eyes, move into the yoi position with ibuki (figs. 3 to 6).
On the command “Hajime” move into right sanchin dachi simultaneously slowly blocking morote chudan uchi uke (n.b. no ibuki — nogare breathing) (fig. 7).
In the same position slowly bring the left fist back to the ready punch position (to a mental count of four) (fig. 8).
Inhale and execute, at a moderate speed, a right jodan tensho circular hooking movement (figs. 9 to 11). Immediately reverse the hand movement using shuto completing the technique at the ready punch position, hand open (block or strike) (figs. 12 to 14) (n.b. on both the circular movements you inhale sharply with short breaths).
Position the right hand as shown (fig. 16) and execute at a moderate speed a circular movement similar to shuto hizo uchi continuing the circular movement back to the ready punch position with the right hand open (figs. 16 to 19).
From this position slowly execute a right jodan koken uke (figs. 21 and 22) and immediately follow with a right shuto uchi komi with ibuki, striking forward and down (fig. 23).
Immediately follow with a slow right koken hizo uchi whilst inhaling (figs. 24 and 25) and execute a right chudan shotei uchi with ibuki (figs. 26 and 27).
Move forward into left sanchin dachi simultaneously blocking morote chudan uchi uke and ibuki (figs. 28 and 29).
In the same position slowly bring the right fist back to ready punch position (to a mental count of four) (fig. 30).
Inhale and execute, at a moderate speed, a left jodan tensho circular hooking movement (figs. 31 to 33). Immediately reverse the hand movement using shuto completing the technique at the ready punch position, hand open (block or strike) (figs. 34 to 36) (n.b. on both the circular movements you inhale sharply with short breaths).
Position the left hand as shown (fig. 38) and execute a circular movement similar to shuto hizo uchi continuing the circular movement back to the ready punch position with the left hand open (figs. 39 to 41).
From this position execute a slow left jodan koken uke (figs. 43 and 44) and immediately follow with a left shuto uchi komi with ibuki striking forward and down (fig. 45).
Immediately follow with a slow left koken hizo uchi whilst inhaling (figs. 46 and 47) and execute a left chudan shotei uchi with ibuki (figs. 48 and 49).
Move forward into right sanchin dachi simultaneously blocking morote chudan uchi uke with ibuki (figs. 50 and 51).
In the same position inhale and execute at a moderate speed a morote jodan tensho circular hooking movement (figs. 52 to 54).
Immediately reverse the hand movement using morote shuto completing the technique at ready punch position (block or strike) (figs. 55 to 57) (n.b. on both the circular movements you inhale sharply with short breaths).
Position both hands as shown (fig. 59) and execute a circular movement similar to morote shuto hizo uchi continuing the circular movement back to the ready punch position with the hands open (figs. 59 to 62).
From this position execute a slow morote jodan koken uke (figs. 64 and 65) and immediately follow with morote shuto uchi komi and ibuki, striking forward and down (fig. 66).
Immediately follow with a slow morote koken hizo uchi whilst inhaling (figs. 67 and 68) and execute morote chudan shotei uchi with ibuki (figs. 69 and 70).
From this position quickly execute, in a forward direction, a double hooking movement (positioned at height of neck) and slowly return both hands, open, to the ready punch position whilst inhaling (figs. 71 to 73).
Execute morote chudan yonhon nukite to the solar plexus with ibuki (figs. 74 and 75).
Repeat the double hooking movement (fig. 76) and slowly return both hands, open, to the ready punch position whilst inhaling (fig. 77).
Repeat the double hooking movement (fig. 80) and slowly return both hands, open, to the ready punch position whilst inhaling (fig. 81).
Quickly move back with the right leg into left sanchin dachi and execute a fast shuto mawashi uke (figs. 84 to 88) inhale and execute morote shotei uchi (right hand jodan left hand gedan) with ibuki (figs. 89 and 90).
Quickly move back with the left leg into right sanchin dachi and execute a fast shuto mawashi uke (figs. 91 to 96) inhale and execute morote shotei uchi (left hand jodan right hand gedan) with ibuki (figs. 97 and 98).
The kata is completed by moving the right foot back into musubi dachi (fig. 99) and the mokuso position is retained (fig. 100) until the command “Naore” when the fudo dachi position is taken (fig. 101).
This kata can also be performed in very fast movements to simulate fast attacking and blocking as in combat. This form is known as kenka — your instructor will explain.
